Ontario reports 2,400 new COVID-19 cases, 27 deaths

After two days of daily cases below the 2,000 mark, Ontario is reporting 2,400 new COVID-19 infections and 27 deaths on May 20.

The province detected just 1,588 cases on Wednesday, 1,616 on Tuesday and 2,170 on Monday. Despite the jump from 1,588 to 2,400 today, the seven-day rolling average is still declining, reaching 2,131. The average last Thursday was 2,731.

Ontario administered 144,986 additional dose of the vaccine over the past day, bringing the provincial total to 7,576,724 doses administered and 473,759 people fully vaccinated.

The province completed 45,406 tests in the past 24 hours, marking a 5.2 per cent positivity rate according to Public Health Ontario, compared with 5.7 per cent this time last week.

“Locally there are 607 new cases in Toronto, 528 in Peel, 224 in Hamilton, 181 in York Region and 110 in Durham,” Health Minister Christine Elliott said on Twitter.

Active cases are down slightly to 23,026 total cases, including 1,320 hospitalizations – a decrease of 81 from the day before. Intensive care patients are down 14 to 721 total patients, including 493 on ventilators.

Of the deaths reported today, three were people between the ages of 40 and 59.

To date, there have been 517,090 total COVID-19 cases in Ontario and 8,552 deaths.
