Masks And Faces: The Films Of John Cassavetes TIFF Cinematheque’s retrospective of the work of American indie filmmaker Cassavetes kicks off tonight with a conversation with Gena Rowlands, Cassavetes’ wife who starred in many of his films. Seeinterview with Rowlands and round-up of the series.

Gary Taxali Toronto-based illustrator/graphic novelist Taxali gives a talk and signs books (his next, I Love You, OK?, launches September 22 at the AGO) at the opening for on his installation at the Drake Hotel, where his work graces the front doors and the summer-school-inspired Dining Hall. Lyla Rye Koffler Gallery’s latest offsite project inhabits an actual gallery, Olga Korper, where Rye constructs Swing Stage, a low moving platform whose supports mirror the exposed metal beams of Korper’s beautifully renovated foundry space. Reception and artist’s talk tonight. See listing.

Making $.cents A Strawberry Social raises funds for the John B. Aird Gallery, with prizes, wine and dessert. On exhibit is Making Sense, a show of artists engaged with materials and “making,” including Kai Chan, Ryan Legassicke, Susan Low-Beer and Judith Tinkl. See listing.

The Walls Are Alive With the Sounds of Mad People As part of the Mad Pride festival – a celebration of psyche survivors’ movement for self-empowerment – the Friendly Spike Theatre provides a theatrical walking tour of the CAMH patient-built wall. Stop the Cuts Community Meeting Organized by OCAP, the East End Working Group of the Toronto Stop the Cuts Committee and CUPE 4308 which represents staffers from some front-line services, this gathering focuses on potential cuts to community centers and shelters, and the sell-off of Toronto Community Housing buildings.
