Badlands Terrence Malick’s first feature, inspired by the real-life story of a young couple (Sissy Spacek and Martin Sheen) who go on a killing spree, screens as part of TIFF Cinematheque’s director retrospective. See related story and listing.

Submarine Brit actor Richard Ayoade’s directorial debut, a quirky relationship drama about a maladjusted teen (Craig Roberts), got big buzz last year at TIFF. See review and interview with the director.

Antlers at NXNE The first few NXNE club shows start tonight, which gives you a chance to catch Brooklyn weirdo folkies Antlers at Mod Club. Only a limited number of wristbands/passes get in, so get there early (this will also make sure you get there in time to catch promising opening act Little Scream). See listing.

Save the Boreal Wildlands League, an org pushing to protect the province’s wilds, hosts a talk with Monte Hummel, former director of the World Wildlife Fund Canada and co-author of Caribou and the North: A Shared Future. 6:30-9:30 pm. Free. U of T Faculty Club. See listing.

Art

David Levine The artist behind Habit, a house-like installation in which actors go about their lives while speaking lines from a play (currently at OCADU as part of Luminato), gives a talk at Chapters Festival Hall. Levine, a theatre director who teaches in Berlin, creates work that explores the social and psychological structures underlying performance. See listing.

Taste Of Parkdale Gallery 1313, a supporter of local emerging artists, holds a 13th-anniversary fundraising party with food, a silent auction of products and services donated by local merchants, art by Alex Liros, Freddie Towe and others, and music by El Blanco. See listing.
