No TTC Fares on Smog and Heat Alert Days While the City of Toronto opens cooling centres across the city on blistering days because the elderly, poor and disabled are at risk, they don’t get free transit to get to them. Organizers are working toward a fare-free transit system for all, while reducing smog and environmental damage. Rally and march. Noon-1 pm. Free. Meet at Yonge-Dundas march to Nathan Phillips Square. ROM’s new galleries Permanent galleries exhibiting both new and familiar treasures from the museum’s Etruscan, Roman, Byzantine and African collections have just reopened at the ROM. Roman/Etruscan artifacts include sculpture, ceramics, mosaics, coins, jewellery and militaria, while the Byzantine section has frescoes, jewellery, glass and a limestone ciborium, or altar canopy. One gallery focuses on the Roman Near East. The African gallery highlights recent archaeological discoveries from the ancient Nubian empire of Kush (in modern-day Sudan). See listing.
