The Grange Prize Each year two Canadian photographers (this year Elaine Stocki and Althea Thauberger) and two from another country (this year India’s Gauri Gill and Nandini Valli Muthiah) are shortlisted for the $50,000 award. The winner is then selected by the public, who can vote in person at the AGO’s exhibit or view the work and vote online at thegrangeprize.com. A gala awards presentation happens Nov 1. The four artists attend tonight’s launch party, with music by DJ Jaime Sin, drinks and snacks, at the AGO. See listing.

National Tree Day Protecting the province’s forests is the theme of this release party for John Bacher’s Two Million Trees and Counting The Legacy of Edmund Zavitz (1875-1968). It was Zavitz, Ontario’s Chief of Reforestration, who was responsible for preventing the province from turning into a dust-bowl in the 30’s and for fostering the treed beauty we’re now fighting to preserve. Speakers include Bacher, Stop Dump Site 41 activist, Danny Beaton, Chief Forester of Ontario, Ken Armson and the Ontario Urban Forestry Council’s Brenlee Robinson. 7:30. Free.
