the bride wore black. so did the groom. And so did the guy giving out free Starbucks coffee to all the lost, lonesome goths. The Starbucks that, um, remodelled the old space of legendary goth haunt the Sanctuary on Queen West held an opening bash last week with -- yes, you guessed it -- a gothic theme.
Nobody thought they would come. But they did.
"It was the goths, they came back, I'm telling you!" says Karen Watson, who lives in the neighbourhood. "There they were, reclaiming their territory."
The invitation passed around the 'hood, which burbled, "Come to the New Haunt! Starbucks invites you to the grand opening party at 732 Queen West/the Sanctuary, the original home of goth!" urged partygoers to come dressed in their best gothic attire. The staff even wore specially made black aprons instead of their usual chipper elf green.
"Starbucks likes to fit into whatever community they go into," says Steve Day, the manager at the new location.
But some ex-Sanctuary types definitely weren't going to the ball. Todd Clayton, who DJed at the Sanctuary for five years, was offered a squirt of free coffee as he was passing by.
"I was, like, "No thanks. It cost me my job,'" he snaps.
