Drag queens invade City Hall

City Hall had some unexpected visitors this afternoon as a trio of drag queens handed out invitations to Monday’s International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia.

Alas, the mayor was unavailable.

Amber Alert Ellert, Tina Turner, and Michelle DuBarrry (she’s almost 80 years old people!) did manage to give invitations to many other city councillors, and members of the LGBT community will be back at City Hall in force on Monday to mark the day and raise awareness about homophobia.

The ceremony comes at a time when cuts to Pride Toronto, the non-profit group that organizes Pride Week, are on the table.

A new campaign group called Proud of Toronto has formed to stop the defunding of Pride, which they say is not only a pivotal event in support of the city’s queer citizens but also brings the city millions in tourist dollars every year.

Executive council will debate Pride funding on May 24.
