GO Transit service cuts are coming this month — here’s what you need to know

GO Transit is cutting or reducing train service on several lines starting Sept. 8, with interim changes expected to remain in place until spring 2027.

  • GO Transit is cutting or reducing weekday and weekend service on the Lakeshore West, Barrie and Stouffville lines starting Sept. 8.

GO Transit is cutting or reducing service on several lines this month, with changes beginning Sept. 8 and interim measures expected to remain in place until spring 2027.

The service changes will affect the Lakeshore West, Lakeshore East, Barrie and Stouffville lines, while GO bus schedules across the network will also be adjusted starting Saturday, Sept. 5.

Metrolinx says the service changes are interim measures and are expected to continue until spring 2027.

Metrolinx says the rail changes are being made to support its rail partner’s crew training and certification, as well as to recover from high ridership demands during FIFA and prepare for future service needs.

Here’s what riders need to know.

Lakeshore West

Starting Tuesday, Sept. 8, weekday midday and evening service to and from Niagara Falls will be reduced.

  • The 1:02 p.m. and 7:59 p.m. trains departing Niagara Falls for Union Station will no longer run.
  • The 9:10 a.m. train from Union Station to Niagara Falls will also be cancelled.

Metrolinx recommends that passengers use GO bus Route 12, with connections to Lakeshore West at Burlington GO.

Starting Saturday, Sept. 12, weekend service between Aldershot GO and Union Station will return to every 30 minutes.

Lakeshore East

Weekend service on the Lakeshore East line will also change.

Starting Saturday, Sept. 12, weekend trains between Durham College Oshawa GO and Union Station will return to 30-minute service.

Barrie line

The Barrie line will see a number of weekday trains removed from the schedule starting Tuesday, Sept. 8.

  • The 9:10 p.m. train from Allandale Waterfront GO to Union Station will no longer run.
  • The 8:54 p.m. train from Union Station to Aurora GO will also be cancelled.
  • The 10:01 p.m. train from Union Station will instead leave 23 minutes later, at 10:24 p.m.
  • The 10:54 p.m. train from Union Station to Allandale Waterfront GO will not run.

Metrolinx is directing affected riders to GO bus routes 65 and 68.

Weekend service will also be reduced starting Saturday, Sept. 12, with trains running every two hours between 2 p.m. and 11 p.m.

There are also changes to individual trips. The 4:55 p.m. train from Aurora GO will instead begin at Allandale Waterfront GO, leaving at 4:05 p.m.

The 8:08 p.m. train from Allandale Waterfront GO will instead begin at Aurora GO, departing at 8:59 p.m.

GO bus routes 65 and 68 will provide alternatives, with additional bus service being added.

Stouffville line

The Stouffville line is also facing weekday cuts starting Sept. 8.

  • The 9:25 p.m. and 10:25 p.m. trains from Mount Joy to Union Station will no longer run.
  • The 8 p.m. train from Union Station will make all stops to Old Elm GO. 
  • The 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. trains from Union Station to Mount Joy GO will be cancelled.
  • A new 10:30 p.m. train from Union Station will make all stops to Old Elm GO, arriving at 11:43 p.m.
  • Later-night riders will lose additional service; the 11 p.m. and 12:01 a.m. trains from Union Station to Old Elm GO will no longer run.

GO bus Route 71 is the recommended alternative.

Weekend service will also be reduced starting Sept. 12, with trains running every two hours between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m.

Additional GO bus service will support Route 71.
