As part of a plan to fight standstill traffic, the Ontario government has begun work on a new GO station west of St. Catharines.
The new station is set to be constructed in the Town of Grimbsy, with crews breaking ground as of Tuesday.
The Grimsby station is one of several projects aimed at expanding GO Transit service beyond the Greater Toronto Area, with the province investing $14 billion to increase service frequency and improve regional rail connections.
The new station will be located between Confederation Station in east Hamilton and St. Catharines GO Station and will open in stages.
Features include a customer platform for train service, station infrastructure needed for operations, 220 new parking spots, a bus loop for customers to access GO Bus and Niagara Region Transit services, customer shelters, fare payment kiosks, and digital information screens for trip information. It will also have bicycle racks, a pick-up and drop-off area, and pedestrian walkways to the station.
In a news release, the province said they are using a new standardized design for the station to help reduce construction costs and speed up timelines.
The new station is a part of the provincial government’s $14 billion investment to deliver faster, more frequent service across the GO Transit network, including multiple investments to improve service on the Lakeshore West line.
The project follows the opening of Confederation GO Station in Hamilton in October 2025 and is part of the province’s broader effort to expand GO Transit service across the Greater Golden Horseshoe.
Once complete, Grimsby will become the next stop on the Lakeshore West corridor as Ontario continues expanding GO service between Toronto, Hamilton and the Niagara region.
