In the latest instance of Toronto drivers ending up in the wrong places, a car was found stuck while attempting to enter the upcoming Eglinton Crosstown LRT tunnel near Leslie and Eglinton.
“LRT isn’t even open yet and morons are already trying to the LRT tunnel near Leslie/Eglinton..,” reads a Reddit post, featuring a picture of a black Nissan SUV with its right wheels stuck in the LRT tracks.
Reddit users have since jumped to react to the incident, with some calling the LRT tunnel and tracks a “venus flytrap,” while others are dubbing the incident “a time-honoured Toronto tradition.”
With the main Eglinton Crosstown project now in its 13th calendar year of construction, it is no secret that the timeline for completion is unclear, and neither the city nor Metrolinx has provided an exact date for the opening of the tunnel.
“Aren’t we all tired of waiting? Can’t blame this driver,” wrote one Reddit user.
Another added, “It’s nice to finally see passengers using the Crosstown.”
Given that the tunnel has been under construction for years, many Reddit users are speculating how the driver ended up in this situation.
Many are also confused about how the driver managed to go in the wrong direction against the flow of traffic.
“My best guess is that they were travelling eastward down the ramp and looking for a chance to make a u-turn, they couldn’t see the tracks because of the concrete wall on their left, got to the end of the jersey barriers and saw the curved island terminus on the other side of the tracks (see bottom right of photo) as a good spot for a U-turn, mistook the LRT tracks for streetcar tracks (perhaps because they were first seen from above), drove over the curb, caught the first track which spun the car another 90 degrees to face westward,” one Reddit user commented.
Meanwhile, many are reminiscing about similar incidents from when the Queens Quay streetcar tunnel was under construction, and how “confusing road signs” were “a hot mess.”
Another person who could not fathom how the driver could end up in the situation commented, “This has to be a test of emergency services or something. Surely no-one can be this idiotic. How did they even get there. They are on the wrong side, facing the wrong way. They should definitely have their license suspended if this is real.”
While some think this incident will further delay the project by another five to six years, others are finding humor in it, saying, “Guy was gonna ride the LRT one way or another.”
Another driver was spotted “unsuccessfully” using the walkway in the King West underpass by Sudbury Street, which is closed to traffic and under construction by the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC), as per another Reddit post.
In the photo, a white Range Rover can be seen on the sidewalk in the middle of the underpass, while a police officer confronts the driver and two pedestrians, one of them holding their dog in their arms, seem surprised by the incident.
“It’s sure a weekend for bad drivers,” sums up a Reddit user.
