Featuring Eric Clapton (guitar), Steve Gadd (drums), Marcus Miller (bass), David Sanborn (sax) and Joe Sample (piano), this concert could have been one for the ages. Instead, it’s an uninspired snoozefest that would seem weak even as elevator music. With Clapton in the mix, it’s essentially a blues set, with far too little of the jazz the festival showcases. Sample is the only true legend here, and even he doesn’t get to show his mettle until the end, with a way-too-short pass through Shreveport Stomp. Full House and Groovin’ kind of swing but are devoid of the spontaneity you’d expect considering the assembled talent and the venue. No bonus features or extras to get a feel for the event are included. A must, I suppose, if what you’re after is yet another acoustic rendition of Layla.
