Live: Barbara Hall and journalist/activist Desmond Cole talk carding

The Inspirit Foundation’s ChangeUp 2015 national conference welcomes journalist and activist Desmond Cole and former Ontario Human Rights Commission head Barbara Hall for a conversation tonight on the controversial police practice of “carding” of racial minorities. The event will be streamed live here from the Ismali Centre starting at 7:30 pm.

Cole’s Toronto Life article earlier this year on his personal experiences with the police practice of street checks garnered widespread exposure and propelled renewed discussion about police-black community relations, as well as systemic issues of racism in the Toronto police force.

Hall, who served as the OHRC’s chief commissioner for 10 years until recently, is a longtime champion of minority and LGBTQ rights. Hall joined a number of prominent Torontonians recently in calling for an end to carding. Cole and Hall’s discussion will include the role of protest and human rights in tackling issues of systemic racism.
