Mark Me a Jedi

Rating: NNNNN

jedi knights are on the loose in Canada! An e-mail widely circulated in New Zealand during its census, in a bid to get enough Kiwis to declare “Jedi Knight” as their religion in order to give it official status, has made its way to the Dark Side of the globe just in time for the Canadian census.

“Is that a religion?” asks Cindy Koh, a 2001 Census spokesperson. “Who’s their leader?”

Unlike New Zealand, Canada has no threshold after which a faith, order or bunch of light-sabre dinks can declare itself an official religion, but Canadians do self-identify on the form. Some have described the Jedi philosophy (move stuff with your mind, don’t screw your sister) as being similar to Zen Buddhism.

“We try to include as many religions as possible,” says Koh.

But Kiaran McEvoy, the self-described “Star Wars loser” at Silver Snail Comics on Queen, is worried about the devious Jedi plans. “I think it’s as absurd as someone learning Klingon as their first language. I’ve seen way too many people who would do that seriously.” May the farce be with you….
