Toronto mayoral candidates Olivia Chow, David Soknacki, Karen Stintz and Sarah Thomson braved the rain and judgment of the city’s Latino community yesterday (July 19), and accepted the organizers of Salsa on St. Clair’s dance challenge.
Though it may not be true that Toronto’s mayor should necessarily know how to salsa (as the challenge stated), it’s probably true that the next mayor of Toronto should know how to have a little fun at a street festival. (Neither John Tory nor Rob Ford showed up for the challenge, though both candidates dropped by the festival.)
For those that did perform, it was an appropriately cringeworthy performance. But Karen Stintz looked remarkably relaxed despite her flailing campaign, while Soknacki took a predictably methodical approach to the challenge, counting each step carefully while staring at his toes. Sarah Thomson fared slightly better at salsa dancing than she has in previous campaign/entertainment videos, while Olivia Chow was overshadowed by her handsome partner’s confident steps.
So: who won? Well, who cares, really? But Olivia Chow clearly thinks she did, tossing her white blazer playfully into the crowd after the competition, kind of like a band’s frontwoman might at, say, Casino Rama.
