A memorial has been set up for the 16-year-old boy who was fatally stabbed in an “unprovoked” attack at a TTC subway station on Saturday night.

The Toronto Police Service (TPS) identified the victim as Gabriel Magalhaes of Toronto. Police say he was sitting on a bench in the lower level of the station when a man approached him and stabbed him.

In a news release, police said it happened just before 9 p.m Saturday when officers responded to a stabbing call at Keele station. Police found Magalhaes with life-threatening injuries. He was rushed to hospital where he later died.

Later on Saturday, police arrested 22-year-old Jordan O’Brien-Tobin and he was charged with first-degree murder. He appeared in court on Sunday at the Toronto Regional Bail Court.

Since the stabbing, residents have placed bouquets of flowers, stuffed animals and blue-coloured cards outside of the station in memory of Magalhaes.

SEPARATE STABBING NEAR KEELE STREET

Just one day after this fatal incident, another victim was stabbed onboard a TTC bus near Keele Street and Donald Avenue, just outside George Harvey Collegiate Institute.

Police received reports of a man with stab wounds around 11:45 p.m. on Sunday. He was transported to a hospital with serious injuries.

Police say the suspect fled the scene and no suspect information has been released.

Police continue to investigate both incidents. Anyone with information is being asked to contact police at 416-808-7400 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
