This is the time when lots of other people and I get S.A.D. - seasonal affective disorder, a malaise of darkness brought on by the seasonal shift. But this year there is that extra shadow - the stateside prez. I can hardly get out of bed. I've got Bush affective disorder - B.A.D. Fortunately, there is help for this condition.
First, stop literalizing like some kind of fundamentalist! The early darkness that is upon us now is not literally the "moral darkness" or the leading edge of the "dark age." It's merely the Earth turning into its own shadow, gazing back along the star trails into its past. A very beautiful thing, really, especially when lit from within by a thousand candles.
Don't confuse the literal dark with the human dark. Don't let the poetry of the situation get to you.
Second, start exercising.
There's a definite correlation between regular aerobic exercise and well-being. But if you've got S.A.D.-B.A.D. this year, don't just exercise your limbs; exercise your rights. Speaking out, even though it feels useless at first, is a very good prophylactic against the diseases of despair and silence.
Keep asking questions.
Remember, curiosity kills the catastrophe. Question the empire before the empire questions you. Be mouthy while you can.
Some will wish to offset mood disorders with various "medicinal" pre-emptive strikes. The culture is full of them: herbs, pills, supplements, suppositories, drinks, diets and hits. What works for you is very individual, so please don't be a snob about your drug of choice.
Words and concepts, too, can be remedial. Dose yourself daily with appropriate aphorisms and affirmations. Like this one from www.anti-war. com: "Anyone who has the power to make you believe absurdities has the power to make you commit injustices" (Voltaire). Or this one: "A night is only as dark as the people in it."
Finally, don't just get full-spectrum bulbs. Subscribe to a wide radiance in general. Get satellite TV and multiple news sources, take in some world music. Don't just put a candle in the window. Remember that we are candles. Long, slow chemical flares who radiate heat energy. If we want to shine more, we only have to raise our temperature.
So have a sexual fantasy and light up the world. If we add our own glow, then the overall glow of everything increases. We shine for others and we shine for ourselves. Why would we lock such luminescence up indoors? The world needs your incandescent smile. It is necessary to go out and dance anyway.
"Forget your sickness and dance."
"Dance for your life."
And remember, if you will, "doom" is only "mood" backwards.
