It’s bad news for Canadians signed into their family or friend’s Netflix accounts.

“A Netflix account is intended for one household,” the company said in a statement Wednesday.

They said password sharing affects their ability to invest in projects.

“Today, over 100 million households are sharing accounts — impacting our ability to invest in great new TV and films,” Netflix’s Director of Product Innovation Chengyi Long said in the release.

Netflix is rolling out “different approaches to address this issue” starting today in Canada.

Members will have to set a primary location in their account, meaning only people who live in the same household can use the account.

Users can buy an extra member on their standard or premium plan for up to two people they don’t live with—each with a profile, personalized recommendations, login and password, for an extra $7.99 per month per person in Canada.

People using an account outside of their household can transfer their profile to a new account, which they will have to pay for. If they transfer their profile, they will be able to keep their personalized recommendations, viewing history and their watch list.

Though it’s unclear how, users can still use the streaming platform while they travel.

“Members can still easily watch Netflix on their personal devices or log into a new TV, like at a hotel or holiday rental,” the statement said.

They end their statement by saying they will “refine these new features based on member feedback so that we continue to improve Netflix in the years ahead.”
