Online Obama fatigue

To the Internet users of Canada obsessing over Barack Obama: Enough!

[rssbreak]

Before Barack Obama even entered national politics in the U.S., he was the international favourite to win the presidency. That was a forgone conclusion: President George W. Bush may or may not have done irrevocable damage to his country’s reputation worldwide, but he definitely tarnished that of his party. So Canadians, who are generally to the left of the Republicans anyway, were almost certain to support Obama.

But that assertion could have been made (and specifically was made) in January. Canada was already captivated. Cutesy little videos began popping up. The Toronto Star’s collective head nearly blew up. And the inevitable campaign-jacking began: The Green Party, Liberals and NDP seem to be aligning themselves with the Obama change doctrine, in some cases obviously so.

But now this getting extremely tacky.

An unfortunate Stephen Harper supporter watched “I Got a Crush…on Obama,” the hugely popular Obama-boosting music video, and made a sound-a-like for our current PM. Except in place of humour and creativity is downright creepiness. Listen here. (Aside: there’s no way this was made by a Harper fanatic. It had to come from somewhere inside his campaign. Had to!)

And then there’s the t-shirt hawking site pictured above. It appears that it’s only going to get more tedious.
