protest class

Rating: NNNNN

unlike the corporate moguls  having drinks with world leaders at the Quebec summit, it won’t cost you $75,000 to go to the free trade teach-in next Sunday (April 1) in Ottawa. You do, however, have to pre-register. That’s one of the security details that comes with holding an anti-corporate event complete with instructions on civil disobedience in such an unlikely location — the Parliament buildings. If you want to attend, call 613-241-4611 (that’s the Sierra Club of Canada) between noon and 4 pm Saturday or Sunday (March 24 and 25).

Sunday’s activities will be followed by an action Monday at the department of foreign affairs and international trade (DFAIT), where protestors will try to “liberate” the text of the Free Trade Area of the Americas that will be discussed at the Quebec summit.

Teach-in organizer Kerry Pither says the Parliament Hill venue is deliberate symbolism. “We’re doing what the MPs should be doing — asking hard questions about the free trade agreement.”
