Seems to me the media's missing the point on the latest sorry act that is Rob Ford's run for mayor.
I'm speaking of course of Ford's putting his foot in it this week on the gay thing again - trotting out one Wendell Brereton, the council candidate for Ward 6, to show how inclusive he supposedly is (Brereton is black), and ending up having to defend his opposition to gay marriage.
The guy's a train wreck waiting to happen every time he diverges from the certain death by taxes shtick.
But I very much doubt any of his supporters really care how abhorrent Ford's views are on gays or gay marriage since anyone who's voting for him probably shares that view.
Ford supports the traditional definition of family. Gee. There's a surprise.
More importantly for voters, the small shit storm kicked up over the embarrassing episode (see Ford run into City Hall to escape the media), shows Ford to be something more than just anti-gay (we knew that).
He's a flat out liar, too, which is arguably worse for a politician.
I mean, this was the same guy who took part in that scripted apology to
AIDS sufferer HIV-positive Dieter Doneit-Henderson early in the campaign. Back then it was to defuse the controversy over Ford's opposition to city funding for AIDS programs (he famously said you cannot get AIDS unless you were gay or a drug user).
He followed that up with a vote to oppose funding for Pride a short time later.
And he's certainly been making hay whenever he can with the $12,000 spent on Kyle Rae's retirement party? Smells a little homophobic to me to be deriding a little fete thrown the only openly gay member of council for his many years of public service. Perhaps I'm being too sensitive on that one.
The shocking thing is that Ford keeps getting away with his BS - if we are to believe the polls - or that we should be shocked at all. What did we expect from lowest-common-denominator Ford?
For someone who's presenting himself as a stand-up guy, Ford seems willing to do or say just about anything to win a few votes, whether it's bullshit apologies to present the illusion he's gay positive, or endorsing fundamentalist Christians whose views have no place in politics.
Don't even get me started on his blow jobs to the cops over the G20 mess. Crisis? What crisis? Fordo's angling for that cop union support (nudge, nudge, wink, wink) like there's no tomorrow.
Next thing you know the xenophobes will be flocking to Ford. Too late.
Or maybe you haven't heard yet - I'm Voting for Rob Ford Because He's Not a Communist T-shirts are being hawked on the Islam-hating Blazing Cat Fur blog.
It's like that with Ford. He brings out the worst in people. Who knew?
