SkipTheDishes partners with Canadian chefs in food waste reduction initiative

Canadians waste 2.2 million tonnes of food each year, 13 per cent of which comes from leftovers, a new zero waste initiative pioneered by food delivery platform SkipTheDishes found.

Skip’s research also suggests that among Canadian consumers surveyed, 70 per cent had leftovers, and 68 per cent threw away all or part of them. Nonetheless, 73 per cent of participants said they were willing to reduce food waste. 

But, according to the study, the main reason Canadians are throwing out leftovers is because they didn’t know what to do with them. 

So, in the lead-up to Circular Economy Month and Waste Reduction Week, which runs from October 16-22, and the interest of formulating innovative solutions to reducing waste, SkipTheDishes has partnered with three of Canada’s top culinary talents, including Piano Piano’s head chef Victor Barry, for a new zero waste content series that provides educational resources on how to up-cycle leftovers. 

As part of the series, Barry transforms Piano Piano’s iconic Veal Parmesan into a delectable breakfast sandwich to enjoy the next day.

Skip has more than 50,000 restaurant partners across over 260 cities and towns in Canada and recognizes the environmental impacts of its wide-reaching influence.

 “As we continue our fight against food waste, we know that even a small change can go a long way and we want to inspire Canadians to do just that..we recognize the important role we play in driving more sustainable behaviours for our industry, our communities, and our environment,” Interim SkipTheDishes CEO Steve Puchala said in a press release.
