What Redpath Sugar Refinery and Museum, 95 Queens Quay East, at the foot of Jarvis - part of Doors Open 2013.
Claims to fame Canada's largest sugar refinery is one of the oldest remaining pieces of functioning industrial infrastructure on the waterfront - and, more importantly to lovers of the lake, an accidental bulwark against runaway condofication.
Opened In 1959 to coincide with the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway. The factory was bought in 2007 by American Sugar Refining Inc., whose shareholders include anti-Castro exiles who fled to Florida in the wake of the Cuban revolution.
Construction A series of cubic, cylindrical and triangular buildings connected by spans and tunnels on 4.25 hectares.
