cab owners who have yet to in- stall cameras in their vehicles won’t have to if Peter Chapman gets his way.
The 30-year vet of the road is asking the court to strike down a bylaw making the devices mandatory by April.
About half the cabs in T.O. have already been outfitted, but Chapman says the city didn’t have the authority to draft the legislation in the first place. He argues that workplace safety is a provincial responsibility.
He doesn’t think the electronic eyes will prevent crime, which is why they were mandated. Chapman says 230 other cab owners are backing his legal effort. “Most of the owners don’t want them,” says Chapman. “They’re not going to save you anyway.”
