An iconic 22,000-square foot nightclub, The Guvernment, shut its doors over a decade ago. This month would’ve marked its 30th birthday, and clubgoers are reflecting on the now-closed hotspot.
The waterfront nightclub which sat at the corner of Queens Quay East and Richardson Street was once one of the world’s most recognized electronic music destinations and put Toronto on the map, ranking eight in the world in DJ Mag’s Top 100 Clubs.
Iconic artists such as Tiësto, Armin van Buuren and Carl Cox also performed at the nightclub.
But in 2015, the venue was replaced with the Daniels City of the Arts development.
Now, the ex-owner of The Guvernment, Charles Khabouth, has since founded INK Entertainment, which owns various nightlife venues around the city. Still, The Guvernment is remembered as a place where fashion and good vibes came together for a great night.
“Thirty years later, its legacy still lives on in the DNA of Toronto’s entertainment industry. It wasn’t just a nightclub; it was an institution that put Toronto on the international music map and shaped an entire generation,” Charles Khabouth, CEO of INK Entertainment said in a press release.
Now Toronto asked Torontonians their thoughts on nightlife since the club’s closure.
Toronto resident Henry C. used to work at The Guvernment, so the mention of the club alone brings him back to memories.
“There’s a phenomenon of nostalgia… I worked there for a brief period of time. I saw a few concerts. Ginuwine was my last concert,” he shared.
Henry says back then, clubgoers dressed up better, and that nightlife has “definitely gone down since then.”
Toronto resident Leonardo L. says it used to be a popular nightclub, and since it’s gone, he feels clubbing isn’t worth it.
“I feel like clubbing is kind of dying out… The economy definitely plays a role in whether or not people are actually going to clubs in this day-and-age… The scene has changed, and I feel like people just don’t enjoy spending time outside anymore or being out late at night,” he told Now Toronto.
Leonardo added that people also used to dress way better than nowadays.
“I remember the times that I would go to a club, I would definitely wear some of my fanciest shirts or my fanciest clothes. I feel like today, things have changed a bit,” he said.
But Toronto resident Keith K. disagreed with Leonardo’s statement, saying people dress up more these days.
“They’re less relaxed, they’re more worried about how they look. Instead of it being a creative expression or about a good time, they’re more preoccupied with how the aesthetic comes across,” he said.
Keith says he misses The Guvernment.
“It was fun and relaxed… I did a bunch of concerts there. It was a really unique and great place,” he said.
