Some Canadians believe former NDP MPP Sarah Jama should get an apology after Canada voted for a ceasefire at the United Nations Assembly this week.
TikTok user Dylan (@dylan.horner) took to social media to share his frustration over Jama getting dropped from her caucus for being the first politician to call for a ceasefire over two months before the country joined in her call.
“I’m gonna need a formal apology along with the reinstatement of Sarah Jama immediately,” he said.
“When more than 20,000 Palestinians were un-alived, along with the mass destruction of the Gaza Strip, Canada finally voted for a ceasefire…snaps and claps for you for not being a genocide enabler. The math is not mathing.”
He goes on to ask why an MPP was ejected for calling for what Canada’s UN representative did.
“The way that Israel and the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) conducted themselves in the Gaza Strip since she made that statement has not changed, if anything it’s been worse because they’ve broken so many more international laws and committed war crimes,” Dylan continued.
He also said it was not acceptable for Ontario Premier Doug Ford to call her anti-semitic.
Some Canadians agreed.
“Yesss they better apologize and bring back Sarah Jama because she didn’t have to wait for 2 months before calling for a ceasefire unlike some people,” one user wrote on TikTok.
“It doesn’t matter how right someone is. If they speak out first they always seem to be punished,” another said.
Support for Jama came even before Canada called for a ceasefire.
In fact, an open letter made the rounds online calling for any and all discussions around her removal from the party to “not be entertained.”
“MPP Jama’s statement upholds human rights and international law and does not merit the removal of MPP Jama from caucus. MPP Jama calls for an immediate cease fire and de-escalation. Further, she is urging us to look towards ending all occupation of Palestinian land and an end to apartheid,” the letter, which raised nearly 3,000 signatures, read.
