Top 10 news stories of the year

NOW’s most-read News stories of 2011.

1. Naked ambitionThis story reports on Rob Ford after four months into his first year in office, and how uninterested he seems in what’s taking place at city hall but instead, is hand-picking PC candidates. Article discusses his luck, American-style political action committee and how he’s heading the neo-con revival. Here are the letters to the editor on the same story.

2. What killed the club district? Residents and clubs have been at war for years but remember the good old days when the club district was tucked away in a part of Toronto that was hidden from scrutiny? 3. City hall tries to ban NOW Magazine City Hall couldn’t handle a photoshopped picture of Rob Ford on our cover. Getting aggravated led to an attempt to censor us from the public by demanding that all copies of NOW Magazine across Toronto be removed and disposed of. What happened to the concept of free press here?

4. A vainglorious partisan spectacle Apparently, Jack Layton didn’t go about dying in the right way. This of course is according to Christie Blatchford’s instructional column on how to die that was published by the National Post only 10 hours after his passing. This body of work helped Blatchford obtain the title of a vainglorious writer and ruthless partisan Conservative and no, neither is a compliment.

5. George Lepp and the mystery penis Well, this is awkward. Not exactly the impression you want to leave with voters when you’re a PC candidate. Whether it was Lepp’s member or not, the image certainly leapt of the page in the Twitterverse.

6. Beach city It’s not exactly feasible to head to California every time you need a beach vacation. Luckily, when it comes to beautiful shorelines, Toronto’s got a few hidden gems. This is our guide to the best beaches in the city and its surrounding areas.

7. Jack grew into himself Jian Ghomeshi pays tribute to Jack Layton by sharing his fondest memories of the former Toronto councilor and NDP leader.

8. Gambling Giambrone Who you choose to ‘diddle’ is none of our business. But the city gets pretty interested when the diddler is running for mayor. In this story, Adam Giambrone’s ‘inappropriate relationship’ was called a gamble and, needless to say, his political enemies were loving it. Can you really blame the man for being human? In the world of politics: well, yes.

9. John Steinberg, 1944-2011 After battling cancer, John Steinberg, one of the city’s most reputable hair stylists passed away this fall. However, he definitely won’t be forgotten after styling an estimated 90,000 heads, being recognized as one of the industry’s pioneers.

10. Legalize It Repression can be deadly. Not everything rebellious needs to be criminalized does it? Everything’s fine in moderation, right? Well, here’s our speculation on a few things that could be worth re-thinking, you know, ‘cause it’s a free country and all that. Inside: ten reasons why we need to decriminalize drugs, why last call should be later (a lot later) and five things that could make Toronto a better place to drink.
