With the MLB trade deadline now in the books, the Toronto Blue Jays have significantly reshaped their roster after a flurry of deadline-day moves.
The Toronto Blue Jays were not exempt from this, as many of their players who brought the team to the 2025 World Series run will no longer be representing the blue birds.
Rather than committing to a full rebuild, the Blue Jays used the deadline to move several veterans while bringing in a mix of MLB-ready prospects, signalling an attempt to stay competitive while getting younger.
What is the MLB Trade Deadline?
The MLB Trade Deadline comes around the halfway point of the season. It’s the last point in which players on a 40-man roster can be traded between teams.
The deadline to trade fell on Aug. 3 this year, at 6 p.m. EST.
Kevin Gausman heads to the Cubs
The biggest trade was starting right-handed pitcher Kevin Gausman, who was given to the Chicago Cubs on Monday in exchange for younger talent – number 13 prospect Ty Southisene and number 21 prospect Brett Bateman.
Guasman was a significant part of the Jays’ recent postseason runs, even starting off five playoff games during Toronto’s World Series run in 2025.
The reliable veteran pitcher ends the last year of his five-year contract this year, marking the end of an era.
José Soriano and Jameson Taillon bolster the rotation
The Jays ensured the starting line up would remain strong, by helping fill the rotation vacancy left by Gausman, with right-handed pitcher José Soriano.
Soriano comes from the Los Angeles Angels, where he stands out with a 9-6 record, 127 strikeouts and a 3.29 earned-run average this season.
Additionally, Soriano made himself known by being the American League’s pitcher of the month from March to April.
On Sunday, the Jays also separately acquired Cubs’ right-hander Jameson Taillon during their first deal with the Cubs.
While the 34-year-old won’t directly replace Gausman’s production, he gives Toronto another experienced arm as it balances a younger rotation.
Daulton Varsho traded to Houston
Left-handed outfielder Daulton Varsho was traded south of the border as well, going to the Houston Astros.
Varsho spent four seasons with the Blue Jays. He was a reliable outfielder who was able to play multiple positions, with most of his plays landing his centre and left field.
Despite this, the Jays found Varsho at times missed the mark, hitting only .243 with a .682 OPS this season, according to the team.
In his place comes right-handed pitcher Spencer Arrighetti, with the team also acquiring cash considerations.
Arrighetti is also a younger starter, emphasizing the team’s push towards building toward the future.
Arrighetti arrives as another young starting pitcher, featuring a fastball in the low-to-mid 90s and a curveball that has become one of his best swing-and-miss pitches.
Jeff Hoffman moved in late deadline deal
With just 30 minutes left of the 6 p.m. deadline, relief pitcher Jeff Hoffman was sent away to the Minnesota Twins, taking his veteran status and strong arm with him.
Hoffman had a knack for fastballs, making batters swing-and-miss many times. His late-game skill will be an asset to the Twins.
In exchange for Hoffman’s skill and versatility on the team, Toronto is getting left-handed starting pitcher Dasan Hill, right-handed pitcher John Klein, and infielder Dameury Pena, as well as an international signing bonus pool space.
