Toronto shatters Canada Day heat record amid a week of scorching heat wave across the GTA

Environment Canada says Toronto Pearson, Oshawa and the Woodstock area all set new daily maximum temperature records on Canada Day as temperatures climbed into the high 30s and humidex values reached the upper 40s.

Daily maximum temperature records were shattered across Toronto and parts of southern Ontario on Canada Day as an intense heat wave pushed temperatures into the high 30s and humidex values into the upper 40s.

According to Environment Canada, daily maximum temperature records were set in Toronto and several surrounding communities.

Toronto Pearson Airport

  • New record: 36.0 C
  • Previous record: 35.6 C
  • Records have been kept since 1937

Oshawa Airport

  • New record: 35.2 C
  • Previous record: 33.9 C (set in 1931)
  • Records have been kept since 1882

Woodstock area

  • New record: 34.9 C
  • Previous record: 34.4 C
  • Records have been kept since 1871

Humidex and wind reached extreme levels

In addition to record-breaking temperatures, humidex values also reached dangerous levels across the region.

Toronto Pearson Airport recorded a peak humidex of 48 C, while downtown Toronto reached a peak humidex of 45 C.

Strong winds accompanied the heat, with maximum wind gusts reaching 104 km/h at both Toronto Pearson Airport and Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport.

Heat warning remains in effect

As of Friday, Toronto remains under Environment Canada’s extreme heat warning.

Daytime highs are expected to reach the low 30s, with humidex values once again climbing into the low 40s. Environment Canada is also forecasting thunderstorms across the region throughout Friday.

Relief is expected to arrive over the weekend, with cooler temperatures forecast beginning Sunday.
