After months of big promises, heated debates and campaign polls, Toronto voters will head to the polls today to elect their next mayor, city councillors and school board trustees. Here’s everything you need to know before casting your ballot.
When do polls open?
Polls opened at 10:00 a.m. on Monday and will close at 8:00 p.m. Eligible voters must vote at their assigned voting location which can be found on the city of Toronto’s website.
Assigned voting locations can also be found on Voter Information Cards (VIC) for those who received them in the mail.
The City of Toronto advises voters to vote during off-peak hours between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to avoid lineups.
Do I need identification?
Voters are reminded to bring one piece of acceptable ID with their name and qualifying Toronto address. Photo identification is not required.
For a faster voter process the City of Toronto encourages voters to bring their VIC.
Am I eligible to vote?
To be eligible to vote in the municipal election, a person must be:
- a Canadian citizen
- at least 18 years old
- a resident in the city of Toronto; or a non-resident of Toronto, but they or their spouse own or rent property in the city; and
- not prohibited from voting under any law.
Are voting locations accessible?
The City of Toronto says a voter can bring a friend, family member, caregiver, or other support person to assist them at the voting place. Alternatively, an election official can also help a voter with accessibility needs.
Two polling stations in every ward will be equipped with a Voter Assist Terminal (VAT), a device that lets voters with disabilities mark a paper ballot privately, independently and securely. Voters can find out if their station has a VAT by visiting the City of Toronto’s website.
When will results be available?
Unofficial results will be announced after voting locations close at 8:00 p.m. The unofficial results will include totals from advance voting, voting by mail and election day. Unofficial results will be posted on the Toronto Election Results webpage.
