Toronto police have revealed a new clue in the unsolved murder of 31-year-old Ding Ping Wang.
Investigators now believe the man wanted in his killing goes by the name “Jay.” They also say the same suspect may have been involved in an attempted murder four months later.
Wang was killed in Scarborough on Nov. 12, 2022.
Police responded to a plaza near Midland and Passmore avenues after receiving an “unknown trouble” call. They say Wang was sitting inside a vehicle when an unknown suspect approached and shot him.
Wang suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene.
Police believe suspect goes by ‘Jay’
Nearly four years after Wang’s death, investigators have released a new detail about the man they are trying to identify.
Police now believe the suspect goes by “Jay.”
Investigators have not released his full name. They are asking anyone who recognizes him or knows his identity to contact police.
The announcement follows another public appeal on July 28.
At the time, investigators released security footage showing the suspect travelling the same route on Nov. 11, 2022. That was one day before Wang’s murder.
Police also released an artist’s rendering of the man. An eyewitness who came forward helped investigators create the image.
Investigators previously said the suspect’s movements suggested he was conducting “reconnaissance” of the area before the killing.
Suspect may be connected to another shooting
Police have now revealed another development in the investigation.
New security footage appears to show the same suspect in connection with an attempted murder on March 10, 2023, according to investigators.
That incident happened near Midland and Passmore avenues — the same area where Wang was killed about four months earlier.
Police also believe the suspect had access to a black four-door SUV at the time.
Investigators have not said what connection, if any, exists between the victims in the two cases.
They also have not publicly identified the suspect beyond the name they believe he uses.
Police are asking anyone who recognizes “Jay” or has information about either incident to come forward.
