A viral video of a Toronto Uber driver abandoning his vehicle mid-ride to chase a cyclist is currently under investigation by the rideshare company.

Over the weekend, a TikTok user posted a video titled “Toronto Uber Experience,” which briefly shows their point of view of the incident from inside the vehicle.

The cyclist seemingly tells the Uber driver to move out of the way, in which he responds with expletives.

The driver then suddenly halts the vehicle, causing the rider’s bags in their lap to move forward. The driver then quickly exits the vehicle without uttering a word, and crosses the street to run after the cyclist. The video cuts just as he turns a corner, but not before he leaves one of his sandals behind.

Uber says it is looking into the video, which has now garnered more than one million views on TikTok as of publication.

“This behaviour is concerning,” an Uber spokesperson told Now Toronto in an email on Monday.

“We want every Uber experience to feel safe, respectful, and positive, and we are continuing to investigate.”

According to Uber Community Guidelines, which pertain to anyone utilizing the Uber Marketplace Platforms including employees, aggressive, confrontational, or harassing behaviour is not allowed. Behaviours such as using language, making gestures, or taking actions that could be disrespectful, discriminatory, threatening, or inappropriate are also a breach of the policy.

Riders can also report any incident or accident via the Uber app or through Uber’s Safety Incident Reporting line, where a team is available 24/7 to respond and investigate incidents globally, the Uber spokesperson noted.
