Unexpected

“Expect us,” says Anonymous….to cause confusion?

Anonymous, the hackivist collective, appear now to be backing down from the grandiose promise to “erase” the Toronto Stock Exchange from the internet on November 7. Or it is getting ready to to cause more problems.

After this article went to press, this message appeared on the Operation TMX video:

WE HAVE PUT A STOP TO THE OPERATION DUE TO ALOT OF CITIZENS OF CANADA THAT ARE A PART OF THE 99% DID NOT AGREE TO THE OPERATION!

WE ARE TRULY SORRY AND WOULD LIKE YOU TO KNOW WE ARE WITH YOU, AND WE STAND BY YOU WITH YOUR OPINIONS BECAUSE WE ALL HAVE A VOICE.

THANK YOU.

It has been pointed out that many of the unions present at the Occupy movements across Canada have assets tied up in the TMX, which could be a part of the reluctance to “erase” it or otherwise disrupt trading.

But, it should be noted, similar conflicting messages were put out in New York before the attack on the New York Stock Exchange’s website.

That account originally warned that an attack on NYSE.com was coming, then it wrote it wouldn’t attack anything. Then it advised it would, but just not on a holiday (October 10 was Columbus Day). The DDoS attacks went forward as planned, but only taking NYSE.com down for under two minutes.

There could be the same organizational problems and in-fighting in the Canadian movement.

Anonymous, of course, is not a single entity. There is no single voice. So there will likely be some DDoS attacks on the TMX, despite the plea to step down.

This of course could all be part of the plan, as well. Call off the attack, then move in full force.

Either way, November 7 is likely still marked off on the calendar at the TMX.
