The University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) has cancelled classes on Tuesday following the death of a 19-year-old man from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound Monday night.
Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
According to the SIU, police received a 911 call Monday afternoon after the man allegedly assaulted a woman in Brampton. Officers subsequently attempted to locate him.
After 9 p.m., police located the man at a student residence on the University of Toronto Mississauga campus, near Dundas Street West and Mississauga Road.
The SIU says a gunshot was heard, and the man was found inside the residence with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead early Tuesday morning.
Before the shooting was confirmed, UTM issued an alert advising students and members of the public to shelter in place due to police activity near the McLuhan Court residence at 3330 Residence Road.
In a statement Tuesday morning, the university said it was saddened to learn of the death and the SIU investigation.
UTM confirmed that the campus would remain open but announced that all Tuesday classes would be cancelled.
The university also said 10 crisis counsellors would be available in the Student Hub to support students and members of the campus community.
Police say no other injuries have been reported and there is no ongoing threat to public safety.
The SIU has assigned four investigators and two forensic investigators to the case.
Because Peel Regional Police officers were involved in the incident and were present in the area at the time of the man’s death, the SIU was notified and invoked its mandate to investigate.
