Toronto Stop the Cuts With the all-important city exec meeting happening on September 19, the Toronto Stop the Cuts coalition (composed of groups like CUPE Toronto District Council, PARC, OCAP, Ontario Coalition of Health and more) host a mass anti-austerity rally with music, food and much discussion of issues and strategy. 12 to 5 pm. Preserving Our Great City The core services showdown looms and community activists are busy lobbying mushy middle councillors and preparing deputations. Attend this town hall to discuss the ramifications of service and program cuts hosted by councillors Paula Fletcher and Mary Fragedakis. 2:30 to 4:30. Free. Eastminister United Church. See listing.

Tim Sweeney The highly eclectic NYC DJ has a lot of influence in left-field dance music, and plays a TIFF gig Saturday night at the Drake. See listing.

Mudhoney If you’re a fan of the grunge pioneers, but don’t want to have to see them opening up for Pearl Jam at the ACC, you can catch them in a more intimate setting at the Horseshoe Saturday. See listing.

Erasure The synth pop veterans hit Sound Academy Sunday night. See listing.

Pearl Jam Grunge is apparently far from dead, as Eddie Vedder and the gang are kicking off a two-night-stand at the Air Canada Centre Sunday night. See listing.

Art

Artists/artisans at Sunnyside/Cabbagetown In the east end, as part of the weekend’s Cabbagetown Festival, artisans and artists set up in Riverdale Park for a sale that usually features innovative work. Meanwhile, on the west side, the Sunnyside Beach Juried Art Show & Sale happens all weekend in the Pavilion, with workshops, installations, live music and a chance to get an old-timey photo portrait taken by the Tintype Studio.

Elle Flander and Tamira Sawatsky The local activist duo give a talk on Road Movie (reviewed in this issue), their excellent six-channel video installation on highways in the West Bank, part of TIFF’s Future Projections program of film-related visual arts exhibits.
