A plan by Toronto Community Housing (TCH) to turn six units at 200 Wellesley East into a community hub for social services has met with some unusual opposition.
Tenants spearheading the fight argue the units should instead be used for affordable housing.
But more to the point seems to be the fact that an organization for settlement services now based in Thorncliffe is being proposed for one of the units.
A group calling itself the Social Housing Advocacy Network argues that “distant community agencies” shouldn’t be getting first dibs on the space.
TCH’s plan for the remaining units includes health promotion services, neighbourhood legal services and a meeting space for tenants.
A community meeting to discuss the proposal is scheduled for tonight (Thursday, December 3) beginning at 6 pm at the Wellesley Community Centre.
