Woman killed in ‘unprovoked attack’ in Toronto’s financial district

A suspect has been arrested and an elderly woman is dead after an “unprovoked attack” in Toronto’s financial district Friday morning, Toronto police say.

It happened around 11:40 a.m. in the area of Yonge and King streets.

Police say they responded to reports of a man assaulting a woman.

The woman, who is in her 70s or 80s, was pushed to the ground during the assault and sustained serious injuries to her face and head, police told media at the scene.

She was subsequently pronounced deceased at the scene, police said.

Investigators said they cannot confirm the cause of death until an autopsy is performed.

Police said the suspect fled the scene and was arrested shortly after the incident.

He is expected to be charged with aggravated assault but the charges could be upgraded depending on the results of the autopsy.

Homicide detectives have not yet taken over the investigation.

Anyone with information is being asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.
