As often happens at city council, Rob Ford said things on Tuesday. And as often happens when Rob Ford says things, Rob Ford said things that were spectacularly wrong. Further disappearing into the bottomless well of his own imagination, Councillor Ford railed against Mayor John Tory’s SmartTrack plan by suggesting that it would involve running streetcars on roads, thus turning the whole city “into St. Clair.” The majority of SmartTrack would, in fact, run on existing rail corridors. Ford, who still knows how to put on a good show of crazy, ended his rant by ripping up a piece of paper (to suggest money wasted on SmartTrack studies), ensuring the clip would loop all day on CP24. Realizing he needed his own visual, Tory held a surprise media availability in the protocol lounge of the mayor’s office, allowing him to call bullshit on Ford while simultaneously reminding everyone who’s in charge.
