Rating: NNNN

To all the cabaret doubters out there, it turns out that people really do want to see local music theatre phenom Ryan G. Hinds perform songs from musicals he’s not in.

Backed by a three-piece band, Hinds puts his endless charisma and fab sense of humour to work tearing through a setlist featuring songs from Evita, Hedwig, and Aerosmith, peppered with funny autobiographical banter explaining the significance of each.

Raised in Mississauga, Hinds relates how he first discovered music through TV before launching into a nostalgia-soaked rendition of CanCon classic Log Driver’s Waltz, which had the whole room joining in for the chorus.

Best, though, is his bit about Disney movies and identifying more with Ursula the Sea Witch than Ariel, which leads to a killer rendition of Poor Unfortunate Souls.
