Soup season returns: 5 hearty bowls to try in the GTA this fall

After what has felt like an endless summer, the weather is cooling down in Toronto, which can only mean one thing: soup season is upon us!

From goat head and chicken foot soups to clam chowder, authentic pho, and lobster bisque, here are five spots in the GTA to grab a bowl of hearty soup.

PHO TIEN THANH

Location: 57 Ossington Ave.

This Ossington spot is a favourite among lovers of pho. 

While Toronto has no shortage of spots to indulge in a delicious bowl of pho, a Vietnamese soup made of broth, noodles, herbs, vegetables, and, depending on the variety, thinly sliced meat or other kinds of protein like eggs or tofu.

The restaurant also offers a variety of soups, including wonton egg noodle soup and chicken mung bean vermicelli soup, as well as other Vietnamese dishes like broken rice and stir-fries.

Location: Multiple Locations

A chain of Jamaican restaurants offering soups, porridge and bowls, Souperlicious is your go-to for Caribbean soups on the go.

With the firm belief that no great soup exists without good ingredients, the chain boasts fresh, nutritious recipe collections including vegetables, meat and seafood.

Their menu includes soup varieties like lobster bisque, wicked Thai chicken, conch, corn, goat head, gungo beans with beef and more. Browse their offerings here.

These eateries have so many soups you won’t know where to start. Options vary based on the day and location, but some examples include sherried lobster bisque, fiery Thai chicken and coconut soup, cream of shiitake mushroom soup, and Jamaican crab bisque. They also offer classics like chicken noodle and vegetable soup, and cold varieties, like Andalusian gazpacho and vichyssoise Parisienne.

Soupnutsy also offers other hearty bowls, like Tex-Mex turkey-beef chilli, as well as sandwiches and wraps.

UNITED BAKER’S DAIRY RESTAURANT

Location: 506 Lawrence Ave. W., Toronto.

Serving the west end since 1912, United Baker’s Dairy Restaurant is famous for its split pea soup. They serve the local favourite, as well as beet borsch, which can be enjoyed hot or chilled, daily. They also have other options, depending on the day of the week. 

On Monday and Thursday, diners can tuck into a bowl of vegetable soup, while barley and bean is served up on Tuesdays and Saturdays, Wednesdays and Sundays call for potato soup, while Friday’s special is cabbage borscht.

RAVI SOUPS

Location: 322 Adelaide St. W.

This Toronto soup lover’s staple has a wide variety of different bowls to choose from.

Their menu includes butternut squash soup, corn chowder, curried apricot and red lentil soup, porcini mushroom wild rice bisque, Ravi stew, chicken hot pot broth, chicken miso and beef miso.

The butternut squash soup and porcini mushroom wild rice bisque are both vegan, while the curried apricot and red lentil soup is vegetarian, and the corn chowder can also be prepared with vegan ingredients.
