Environment Canada has issued a warning for areas north of the GTA as a swarm of thunderstorms is expected to move through Ontario this afternoon. According to the weather agency, the storms could bring winds of 90 km/h and hail as big as a toonie.

Earlier today, there were also tornado warnings in effect for regions in Ontario’s cottage country, including Orillia, Lagoon City, Washago, Bracebridge and Gravenhurst but were shortly cancelled a half hour later.

Environment Canada says large hail can cause damage to properties and injuries, meanwhile, strong winds can lead to loose objects, weak buildings, broken branches and vehicle rollovers. Additionally, heavy rain can cause floods and water pooling on roads.

Emergency Management Ontario is recommending residents take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.
