Delicate dynamic

Rock/Paper/Scissors at Gendai (Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre, 6 Garamond) to April 3, Thursday-Sunday. 416-441-2345. Rating: NNN

Rating: NNN

the japanese sensibility infusing the work of Dennis Lin and Scott Eunson (see above) is echoed in the show Rock/Paper/Scissors at Gendai . Here, three contemporary Japanese artists are paired with three who have a more traditional practice. Like a floor version of Eunson’s wall piece, Yukie Asa creates a three-floor sculpture out of cut and crossed cedar planks and cut leaves (scissors). Kai Chan and Tamotsu Torizuka have collaborated on a very Zen garden of fake floating rocks and sand made from toilet tissue (rock). Delicate paper clouds rain streamers next to a paper wall with dynamic ink markings.

If Urban Forest is calm in the inner city, then Rock/Paper/Scissors is tranquility in the suburbs.
