Interview with Daniel Faria

We sat down with Daniel Faria on the eve of his inaugural exhibition opening for his namesake gallery on St. Helens, just west of Bloor and Lansdowne.

For the interview, we talked about art, duh.

When did you fall in love with art?

As a kid, my family is very Catholic and I loved going into churches, because it was all architecture, stained glass and art. Every time we were in Portugal and I saw a church I would make them stop and go in. So that was it from the beginning.

Later in high school I took art but it was the art history I fell in love with.

Then in university I met contemporary art. My professor Jane Buyers taught the class Intro to Contemporary Art in 3rd year. It was a done deal. I needed to be in contemporary art.

Where is the art world going today?

It’s the new hot thing. Everyone wants to be part of it. Art fairs are the new hot parties. More and more people are becoming interested in art.

How do you feel Toronto factors into the international market?

It only gets better and better.

What can we expect from Daniel Faria Gallery?

Beautiful and thought provoking programming.

“Saint Helen” Exhibit Opens Oct. 5 2011, featuring works by artists Shannon Bool, Kristine Moran and Elizabeth McIntosh.
