It’s the end of an era: Big Brother Canada has been cancelled after 12 seasons.
Corus Entertainment ended the reality competition series, citing numerous reasons like audience trends, available support from sponsors, and production and licensing costs as a factor in the decision, according to a statement from the broadcaster.
“The series has been a leader in the reality TV space, always prioritizing the rich diversity of Canada in front of and behind the camera, and Corus is extremely proud of its unprecedented success across our platforms over the last 12 seasons,” a memo from Global and Corus reads.
The drama-fuelled Big Brother Canada is one of several international spinoffs of the original Dutch show, which features contestants living together in isolation from the outside world while competing weekly for a cash prize. It was hosted by Arisa Cox, who has also served as an executive producer since Season 9.
The final twelfth season wrapped up in May, Halifax’s own Bayleigh Pelham crowned as the winner.
“Today as we say goodbye to the beloved series, we celebrate the great success and impact Big Brother Canada has had in our country and in the Canadian media landscape for over a decade,” Corus Entertainment co-CEO Troy Reeb said in a statement.
“To our #BBCAN fanbase, you have all kept the series thriving and we thank you for joining us on this journey for the last 12 seasons.”
Big Brother Canada posted on X, acknowledging the unforgettable houseguests and thanking the fans for tuning in.
“NOOO!!!” a user replied with crying emojis. “#BBCAN you will be missed!”
“I can’t accept this tweet,” another user posted in disbelief. “My goal was to be a houseguest.”
Season 3 and 5 contestant Bruno Ielo thanked the series online for an amazing show and the opportunities it has given to him and other houseguests.
“BBCAN will always hold a special spot in our hearts,” he posted.
