The Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) is headed to Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena in May 2023.
An official WNBA release says the Chicago Sky and Minnesota Lynx will play a pre-season game in Canada for the first-time ever.
The game will be held on May 13 and ticket information and official start times will be announced soon, according to the release issued on Wednesday.
“Bringing a WNBA preseason game to Canada is an important milestone for the global growth of the league,” WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert said in the release.
“…Canadian stars like Bridget Carleton, Natalie Achonwa and Kia Nurse continue to flourish in and drive interest around the league, we’re looking forward building on the momentum and excitement surrounding the WNBA in Canada with this historic game,” Engelbert said.
Judging by social media reaction, people are thrilled to host a WNBA game in Toronto:
This marks the third WNBA preseason game to be played outside of the United States. The first was in Mexico in 2004 and the second in England in 2011.
The game is also set to be broadcast live in Canada on Sportsnet and TSN.
