Getting into the real-estate market can be a challenge, but stepping away from Toronto’s downtown core might help buyers get their money’s worth, without giving up the convenience.
It is no secret that Toronto’s real estate market is one of the most expensive in the country, with the average home selling price at $1,017,796, according to the Toronto Regional Real Estate Board.
Despite all the benefits that living downtown offers, for those looking to buy their first home, the region’s steep prices might be another huge obstacle.
Moreover, while having easy access to shops, restaurants, transit, and amenities feels like a plus, living downtown may get chaotic.
That’s why stepping away from the core might be a first-time buyers’ way into the market, one that gives them the opportunity to experience a calmer lifestyle.
Kartral Adolfo, a real-estate agent at King Realty Co., tells Now Toronto that many first-time buyers and young families are attracted to Pickering, as the city mixes convenience and proximity to the city, while keeping a more suburban lifestyle.
“The value for money is a lot better in Pickering than it would be in Toronto, for example, and it has a strong mix of lots of amenities, waterfront trails, and there’s a lot of new development coming up,” she explains. “There’s a really fast growing core that a lot of families would like to find themselves in.”
Stepping away from the city also allows buyers to find larger spaces for a cheaper price point, helping them to get more square footage for less.
In addition, Pickering is now welcoming more development, which will bring even more convenience to local residents.
“Right now there’s a shift towards more urban living with all the condo developments that are coming up, which is also bringing in different types of buyers who want convenience [and having] a little bit more of a city feel without actually being in the price point Toronto offers,” she added.
With the market still slow compared to recent years, there’s even more opportunities for buyers to step in without breaking the bank.
“I’m seeing condos in Pickering for as low as $300,000. Space wise, it may not be what you want, it may not be very big, but it’s an entry level,” Adolfo explained.
For those looking to get into the market, here are five Pickering properties listed for under $500,000 you can check out.
