>>> Fringe Review: The Comedy Of Errors

THE COMEDY OF ERRORS by William Shakespeare. Victory Café (581 Markham). July 3 and 10 at 5 pm, July 5-9 at 7 pm. Buy tickets. Rating: NNNN

Shakespeare BASH’d mark their departure from their long-time home at the Victory Café with this special farewell production of one of the Bard’s earliest comedies.

Making original texts clear and engaging has been their calling card since the start, and this production again shows that elaborate staging and design isn’t essential to appreciate Shakespeare.

To underscore this approach, the show begins with the cute and fitting conceit that the troupe’s sets and props have already been moved out, but they will attempt one final minimalist performance anyway.

Using only the most subtle costume changes to differentiate between the two sets of identical twins who suffer the series of confusing run-ins at the heart of the story, the strong ensemble maximize the many funny moments, demonstrating why they’re one of the most respected Shakespeare companies on the circuit.
