With a new English translation, the classic story involves Bluebeard bringing his wife Judith back to their happy suburban home where a locked trunk mysteriously sits in their living room.
Judith begs for it to be opened, and as it is, precious memories begin to spill out, manifesting as flashbacks.
However, Judith is living with dementia, and as the memories unfold she slips further away from Bluebeard, leaving him with the shreds of their life.
The contemporary retelling of Bluebeard’s Castle stars Canadian operatic superstar Gerald Finley and Sweden’s leading Mezzo-soprano Charlotte Hellekant.
The story was originally produced by the ground-breaking opera company Theatre of Sound in London, England.
Bluebeard’s Castle will be performed at the Harbourfront Centre in the Fleck Dance Theatre for three nights only: March 29, 31, and April 1.
