Two Toronto restaurants were awarded a Michelin Star at a special ceremony on Wednesday night, while 82 restaurants offering 28 types of cuisine are featured in the 2023 Michelin Guide for Toronto.
Kappo Sato and Restaurant 20 Victoria are the two new recipients, raising Toronto’s total of restaurants with one Michelin star to 14, including last year’s 12 beneficiaries.
The city also has one restaurant with two Michelin stars. Fewer than 500 restaurants globally have been awarded two Michelin Stars, and less than 140 boast three.
In 2022, the 12 restaurants bestowed the illustrious culinary award were among the first ever to receive a star in Toronto and all of Canada, Vancouver was added to the guide soon after.
Sushi Masaki Saito, which is run by esteemed Japanese Chef, Masaki Saito, is the only restaurant in Toronto, and nationwide with two Michelin stars.
Incognito inspectors visit all prospective Michelin starred restaurants where they judge their star-worthiness according to a preset criteria.
Four Toronto restaurants were also awarded a Bib Gourmand, a special recognition for eateries providing both affordable and high quality dishes. The price bracket varies depending on the country, and in Toronto, BB’s Diner, Sunny’s Chinese, Tiflisi, and White Lily Diner were all recipients at Wednesday night’s awards show.
