Tamlynn Bryson’s solo show is like a more mature, live-action version of Pixar’s Inside Out. When Tess’s boyfriend unexpectedly proposes marriage over dinner, the audience is pulled into the 28-year-old’s mind as she frantically decides whether to say yes or no.
Bryson, who co-wrote the show with Kyle Kimmerly, is a dynamic, physical performer who embodies multiple characters and voices with ease. And with Kimmerly’s smart staging, we effortlessly flash back to conversations Tess had with her mother, grandmother and past lovers.
The show drags slightly in the last half and the ending feels abrupt, but Bryson is a delight to watch and the script’s handling of how humans make – and then justify – seemingly important decisions is clever and accurate.
