Review: Victoria Monét has Toronto on vocal rest after showing out and showing up to let us know it’s not too early in her story

Victoria Monét touched down in Toronto Thursday night, and it’s safe to say the city is on vocal rest until further notice.

The Atlanta-native hailing from California brought all the glitz and glam with the stage presence to match after performing at History and serenading the crowd with songs from her latest album, JAGUAR II.

The artist is arguably having the best year of her career despite releasing her first-ever song10 years ago.

And if her name rings a bell it’s more than likely because she has written some of today’s greatest hits, including “Thank U, Next” by Ariana Grande, “Ice Cream” by BLACKPINK (ft. Selena Gomez) and “Do It” by sisters Chloe and Halle Bailey.

But last night fans got to see the face behind the lyrics and really see who Monét is as an artist in her own right.

And she did not disappoint.

Monét surprised the crowd with fan-favourite throwback tracks from her career, such as “Moments” and “Ass Like That.”

She also had Grande fans in a frenzy when she performed “MONOPOLY,” a song she and the global icon co-wrote and laid vocals on.

But arguably the greatest part of the night was when Monét performed her chart hitting song “On My Mama” and had the whole venue screaming every hook, nook and cranny.

The song is just two months old and has already landed the artist her highest placements on Billboard’s Hot 100, as well as iTunes R&B charts.

And like all worthy tunes, it became a sensation on TikTok seemingly overnight where users tried their hand at her iconic choreography from the music video.

And just a week ago Monét performed the song on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon proving why she is the one to watch.

This comes after the MTV Awards declined her request to perform at the VMAs claiming she wasn’t ready and that it was “too early in her story.”

For many, Monét is a testament of what perseverance looks like, showing that even when you’re at the pinnacle of your career others will still find flaws in you but it’s your responsibility to keep on going.
